Catwoman and Bane will be villains in 'Dark Knight Rises'

Warner Bros has announced that Catwoman and Bane will be the villains in Christopher Nolan's next installment of The Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises.

We are also excited to learn that Anne Hathaway has been cast in the role of Catwoman (aka Selina Kyle), and that Tom Hardy has been cast as Bane.

There has been much debate over the past year as to what villains will return to challenge The Dark Knight, and it's good to finally have some tangible casting news.

Christian Bale will return to play the lead, opposite Anne Hathaway as Catwoman (Selina Kyle) and Tom Hardy as Bane.

Catwoman has been portrayed a few times as the love interest to Batman (most notably with Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns). Halle Berry also portrays her in a short lived stand alone film.

This will be a first appearance for Bane in a feature length motion picture, though in the canon, he has often proved a pivotal villain.  Bane once even "paralyzed [Wayne]by snapping his spine during one of their battles in the epic comic book storyling 'Batman: Knightfall'.  Bane will prove a formidable opponent to the dark vigilante.

What do you think about the casting choices? How about the choice of villain/love interest?

Greenlighted: NBC Picks Up David E. Kelley's 'Wonder Woman'; Steven Spielberg's Musical, 'Smash'

According to Deadline Hollywood, NBC has picked up David E. Kelley's Wonder Woman reboot, which hails from Warner Brothers TV and was originally shelved in early January, due to the studio not being able to "commit to the license fee" and without Greenblatt (NBC entertainment chairman), the WB felt that it wouldn't live up to Kelley's vision.

Now that Greenblatt is on board, NBC has greenlighted Wonder Woman, which is slated as a "reinvention" of the D.C. comic Wonder Woman, aka Diana Prince.  She will portray a "vigilante crime fighter in L.A. but also a successful corporate exec and a modern woman trying to balance all of the elements of her extraordinary life", according to Deadline.

NBC has also greenlighted, Smash, a one-hour musical within a musical about the "mounting of a Broadway musical" based on an idea by Steven Spielberg who will also be an executive producer.  The pilot will be produced by DreamWorks TV and Universal Media Studios, executive producers Spielberg, along with Theresa Rebeck (script), Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of DreamWorks TV, Hairspray producers, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Grammy and Tony-winning songwriters, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman who will compose the original songs.  Talks are under way for Michael Mayer (American Idiot) to direct.

Smash joins a list of shows by DreamWorks TV, including the upcoming Showtime series, The Borgias, and Terra Nova which will air on Fox in the Fall of 2011.

Also picked up by NBC- Mann's World, a one hour drama following the life of Allan Mann, a celebrity stylist in L.A.and I Hate That I Love You which is a comedy involving a straight couple who meets two lesbian friends with romance between the most unlikely of the friends and comedy ensuing.

*update/related:  Adrianne Palicki has been signed on as Wonder Woman.

Liam McIntyre is the New Spartacus

According to Deadline and a release from Starz, Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, has been named as the actor to succeed Andy Whitfield in the lead role of Spartacus, in Starz' Spartacus: Blood and Sand (series 2).

Production of the second series of Spartacus: Blood and Sand originally had to be halted when its star, Andy Whitfield, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. In September 2011, it became increasingly evident (as Whitfield's cancer returned), that the character would have to be re-cast or the show would be cancelled.  In the interim, the producers came up with the idea of expanding a single flashback idea to cover an entire series. Thus, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (which airs tonight on Starz) was born.  It will act as a prequel to the original timeline of the show.

Even with the set-back, the second series of Spartacus: Blood and Sand is expected to begin filming again with Liam McIntyre cast as the new lead (with Whitfield's full blessings).

According to its release, Starz says Liam McIntyre was one of 3 hopefuls who were flown out to vie for the role.  According to Starz' release Liam "has excelled at a grueling and rigorous audition process to claim the title role in the second season".  The actor apparently was told he would need to bulk up for the role of a gladiator.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena Premieres Tonight on Starz

The new season premieres tonight, January 21st, at 10pm ET on Starz.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena will act as a prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand that was originally aired on Starz, January 22, 2010.  It will tell the story of the first gladiator, Gannicus' (Dustin Clare) rise to become champion of Capua.  Lucy Lawless (Lucretia) and John Hannah (the head of the Batiatus family) will reprise their roles, along with Peter Mensah (Oenomaus), and Manu Bennett as (Crixus).  Andy Whitfield will make a brief appearance as Spartacus.

The series was expanded out of a single flashback episode that was to originally have appeared in the second season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand.  The series was stalled when it was discovered that Andy Whitfield, who played Spartacus in the first series, was battling non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Who can resist these classic figurines from Dark Shadows, especially with filming getting under way in April?

Model kit company, Round 2, has acquired the license from Dan Curtis Productions to reissue these Dark Shadows model kits that were originally made in 1960's, during the run of the original soap opera.

The current plan is to bring back the "Barnabas kit in April 2011, the Werewolf kit in August and the Barnabas Collins' Vampire Van in December."

Rumor-Mill of the Day: Kirsten Van Wagner, possibly cast as lead in new 'Dark Shadows'

Pure speculation at this time, but according to a post over at BlogofDarkShadows, actress Kirsten Van Wagner,  an unknown, has been cast as the female lead, Victoria Winters in the highly anticipated new Burton/Depp version of Dark Shadows (scheduled to begin shooting in April).

This information was posted in mid-December, and should be taken entirely with a grain of salt, as its source is imdb, which is typically not the most reliable source of information.

The original Victoria Winters was played by Alexandra Moltke, and the 1991 revival was cast with Joanna Going (see photos below).

*update*  Imdb no longer lists Kirsten Van Wagner. It is not, however, unusual for casting to change at this point as the movie is still classified in the early stages of pre-production.

What do you think?  Should an unknown be cast as Victoria Winters in the lead opposite Johnny Depp?

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's long awaited project- 'Dark Shadows' to begin shooting in April

According to Deadline, filming of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's long awaited project which was scheduled to begin filming this January has been pushed back to April.

Seth Grahame-Smith, the bestselling author of Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, is slated to re-write the  first draft of the feature length film based on the 1960's gothic daytime drama.  The first draft was written by John August. Depp's Infinitum Nihil and Graham King's GK Film are producing, alongside Dick Zanuck.  Warner Bros purchased the rights to the TV series from the estate of Dan Curtis (creator, producer, and director of the tv soap Dark Shadows).

I cannot wait to see yet another collaboration between Burton and Depp, how about you?

Tom Felton set to appear in 'Rise of the Apes'

Tom Felton is set to star in 20th Century Fox's prequel to the Planet of The Apes franchise, Rise of the Apes. The movie is set around a research facility that utilizes cruel testing on primates in order to find a cure for Alzheimer's. It will ultimately tell the events that lead to the great primate uprising and show how the apes gained domination over man.

Tom joins veteran actors, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, David Hewlett, and Andy Serkis along with younger talent such as James Franco, Freida Pinto, and now, Felton.

Brian Cox is set to play the villainous owner of the primate facility (Tom will play his son).  Andy Serkis (Gollum in Lord of the Rings, King Kong) will do another motion-capture performance as Caesar, the primary test chimp who leads the uprising among the apes.  Franco is set to play the kind hearted scientist who takes Caesar home to get him out of danger of Felton's character.

WETA digital of Lord of the Rings fame,  will be rendering the CG apes, which will be a significant departure from the other films in the franchise which relied on costume and make-up.
What do you think?  Will CG apes be believable in this prequel?

Colin Farrell Confirmed for 'Total Recall' Remake

Director Len Wiseman (UnderworldLive Free or Die Hard) is scheduled to realm the remake of Total Recall which will star Colin Farrell.  It has been called a remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, which was based on Philip K. Dick's short novel, We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.

This adaptation will be unlike its predecessor in many ways.  This version will apparently not take place in space, but will instead play out on Earth. This is very ambiguous indeed!  Not sure how it will play  out, but the producer, Neal Moritz, promises a "great twist" in this new film.  What do you think?  How can this story work played out solely on Earth?

Filming is scheduled to begin on May 15 in Toronto.

Tim Whitby/Getty Images

Finally it's official. Both Andy Serkis  and Sir Ian Mckellen have  closed their deals and are set to reprise their roles in Peter Jackson's two-part adaptation of The Hobbit.  Martin Freeman (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Sherlock) has already been confirmed to play Bilbo Baggins.  Cate Blanchett is slated to reprise her role as Galadriel. Elijah Woods, who was confirmed early last week, will most likely reprise his role as Frodo and act as some sort of narrative bridge to connect the timeline of events between films.

Christopher Lee is in talks to return as Saruman, as is Ian Holm (can this be true?).It is rumored Orlando Bloom also has an offer to return as Legolas, but as of yet, there has been no official confirmation of his return and in what capacity.

According to THR, filming is scheduled to begin February 14.

Elijah Wood reportedly to return for 'The Hobbit'

Many of the stars are expected to return in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit -most notably the ones who have a major role in the timeline of The Hobbit. According to theonering.net, Cate Blanchett is confirmed as Galadriel. Rumors suggest Orlando Bloom will be returning in his role as Legolas. Hugo Weaving (Elrond) and Ian McKellan (Gandalf) are still unconfirmed,  though they appear to be in negotiations and are expected to return. Martin Freeman is scheduled to play the young Bilbo Baggins.

Elijah Wood, however, is probably the last person you would think would be returning in The Hobbit. If you've somehow been living in a hobbit-hole, Elijah Wood played Frodo Baggins (Bilbo Baggins' 'nephew') in Peter Jackson's epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Hobbit is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings series, and takes place about 55 years earlier than the events in The Lord of the Rings and will open with a young Bilbo (played by Martin Freeman) who will be the hero of this particular story.

So in what capacity is Elijah returning?  Rumors seem to suggest that the most likely idea is that he will act as a narrator to bridge the stories. But in what way this can work is questionable. What do you think?  Can it somehow work, and most importantly, will it remain true to canon?

Fantasy reigns supreme in cable tv this year

Following the critical acclaim of series like The Pillars of the Earth and Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Starz is set to air it's new fantasy piece, Camelot, this April 1st.

The production has been kept under wraps for a while now, but we know the production team is the same that brought Showtime's Renaissance drama, The Tudors alive.

Executive producing are Morgan O'Sullivan and Michael Hirst, along with Craig Cegielski. Chris Chibnail of popular British projects like Doctor WhoTorchwood, and Law & Order: UK, is writing.

The production focuses on the young life of Arthur and early lore of the title character. Jamie Campbell Bower, who broke onto the scene as Anthony in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, will play young Arthur and Tamsin Egerton, a relative British unknown, is slated as Guinevere. Other notable roles go to Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love) as a down-to-earth Merlin and Eva Green (Casino Royale) as Morgana (the antagonist of lore).

Eva Green in Starz' Camelot

   Camelot synopsis:

In the wake of King Uther’s sudden death, chaos threatens to engulf Britain.  When the sorcerer Merlin has visions of a dark future, he installs the young and impetuous Arthur, Uther’s unknown son and heir, who has been raised from birth as a commoner. But Arthur’s cold and ambitious half sister Morgan will fight him to the bitter end, summoning unnatural forces to claim the crown in this epic battle for control.  These are dark times indeed for the new King, with Guinevere being the only shining light in Arthur’s harsh world. Faced with profound moral decisions, and the challenge of uniting a kingdom broken by war and steeped in deception, Arthur will be tested beyond imagination.  Forget everything you think you know…this is the story of Camelot that has never been told before.

Sean Bean as Eddard Stark in HBO's Game of Thrones

Camelot will have a worthy opponent in HBO's adaptation of George R.R. Martin's Fantasy, Game of Thrones (first book in his series, A Song of Ice and Fire)- also slated for an early April air date.  From all appearances, Game of Thrones appears to be a darker take on the fantasy genre incorporating a power play between multiple vying sanctions for the throne of a fictional kingdom.

If you're not a lover of fantasy, have no fear, Starz' other big hit Spartacus: Blood and Sand is airing its prequel to the original, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena on January 21st.

One of the first concept images of Indy?

This is of course before Harrison Ford was cast in the role.  The concept art is by Jim Steranko, a graphic artist/comic book illustrator -not to mention all around Renaissance man- who was commissioned to do the pre-production concept paintings for Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Steranko is most well known for his time with Marvel, illustrating works like "Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D".

Do I descry Tom Selleck in these images?  Well the resemblance is certainly there, so it's easy to see why (Tom) was being considered for the role of Indy.  I for one am glad they went with Harrison Ford instead.  There is something to be said for that crazy combination of  tough guy humility with a touch of snarkiness and badass that Harrison pulled off so well in these films.

You can see more of Steranko's work here:  Steranko designs as well as the other 3 concept designs for Indy (and my source story), here: concept designs

In search of "Indiana Jones and the City of God", the lost Indy script

Yes it does exist, and supposedly is attributed to Frank Darabont (The Shawshank RedemptionThe Green Mile, and most currently, AMC's The Walking Dead)  whose draft was originally under consideration, before Lucas and Spielberg finally settled on David Koepp's version (the final filmed version).

Of course there are always going to be naysayers out there who dispute the authenticity or authorship of the script. Most, I'm sure, would agree that if it had been made, it could have far surpassed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

And where, you might ask, can you find this lost script?
It is available for download here: City of the Gods.  I am foaming at the mouth to get my hands on this.  Check back for the full review.

What do you think? Is the author of this script indeed Frank Darabont?  Does it measure up or even surpass Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?
