83 Annual Academy Awards this Sunday Night (February 27)

It's that time again.  The 83rd Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC 8/5 this Sunday night, February 27.  The pre-show (live from the red carpet) as usual will start at 7/4.

The expansion of the Best Picture category in recent years has allowed animated favorite, Toy Story 3 and another what would have been unlikely nomination, Inception to take deserved credit in that category. Best Picture nominees this year include:  The King's Speech, Black Swan, The Fighter, True Grit, The Social Network, 127 Hours, Inception, Toy Story 3, The Kids Are All Right, and Winter's Bone.  The King's Speech seems to be a marginal favorite for the win in this category, with the most nominations (12 total) of the night.  Other big scorers include True Grit (with 10 nominations), Social Network and Inception are tied at 8 (though Nolan has been snubbed again in the Best Director category).

According to Kenneth Turan over at The Envelope, prognosticators' favorites are Colin Firth for 'Actor in a Lead Role' for his portrayal of King George VI of Britain in The King's Speech.  Natalie Portman is the shoo-in for 'Actress in a Leading Role' for her portrayal in the Black Swan.  Another highly probable win will be Christian Bale for his supporting performance in The Fighter.

'Actress in a Supporting Role' is harder to pinpoint with newcomers, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) being the youngest, at only 15 and Melissa Leo (The Fighter) in contention.  Other strong nominees in that category are Amy Adams (The Fighter), Helena Bonham-Carter (The King's Speech), and Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom).

The other major category (one of contention) is Best Director.  Darren Aronofsky has been nominated for Black Swan, David Fincher for The Social Network, Tom Hooper for The King's Speech, Joel and Ethan Coen, for True Grit, and David O. Russell for The Fighter.  Right now, though,  it's anyone's guess as to which one will take the award. Nolan seems to have been left out altogether, as he was snubbed a second time.

Tune in Sunday night to find out who will win.

1st Official On-Screen Pic of James Franco in 'Rise of The Apes'

James Franco has been busy of late. Outside of hosting the Oscars this Sunday night, he has earned lots of recognition for his recent film 127 Hours (the film has been nominated for 'Best Picture' category, and the actor himself has earned a nomination for 'Actor in a Leading Role') at the awards.

It is also rumored that Franco will also play the wizard in the upcoming Sam Raimi directed, Oz: The Great and Powerful.  But there is tons of anticipation on his (apetastic)upcoming flick- Rise of the Apes- the story will be a prequel /origin story to the popular franchise Planet of the Apes.

Franco, plays scientist Will Rodman, whose experiments on the ape Caesar (Andy Serkis) will lead to apes with prescience, and, eventually to the war between mankind and apes over world domination.  Apparently this film will depart from the original, in that the apes will be CG.

JoBlo debuted this first look. What do you think about this movie?  Do you think CG apes will work?  I am totally psyched to see this ape apocalypse film!

Tolkien estate trying to prevent publication of novel starring fictionalized Tolkien

© Haywood Magee/Picture Post/Getty Images

Authors would know better than to write any fiction using any of the characters from one of Tolkien's novels, but what about a novel that introduces a fictionalized Tolkien?

According to Blastr, Author Stephen Hilliard did just that in his novel, Mirkwood, which  takes place from 1970 through the near present and features six characters- five fictional ones plus Tolkien himself".

Amazon calls it a "wildly original debut".  The plot seems to revolve around Tolkien as he visits America and somehow "sets in motion" elvish powers that have been embodied in some long lost documents. In this revisionist world, "destinies are altered, legends become real, and two heroines must race for their lives in vastly different worlds" (Amazon).

The Tolkien Estate has threatened a lawsuit if Hilliard doesn't stop his publication proceedings (talk about resorting to threat tactics?!).  In response, Hilliard has filed a lawsuit, claiming his First Amendment Rights to publication and who could blame him?!  It's not like this is the first time something like this has been attempted.  Copyright laws protect derivative works from being published, but this seems to be a truly original idea that just happens to involve Tolkien himself.  I would venture to guess the only derivative is his likeness (and even that is minimal, as he is fictionalized).  I really don't think The Tolkien Estate has a case here.  What do you think?

Guillermo Del Toro To Do Stop-Motion 'Pinocchio'

via Deadline

Guillermo del Toro, along with The Jim Henson Company and Pathe are scheduled to shoot a 3D stop motion animated adaptation of the fairytale Pinocchio. According to an exclusive from Deadline, this film will be much edgier than the previous Disney adaption.

The concept design is based on an illustrated 2002 book by Gris Grimly (who will also co-direct along with Mark Gustafson).

No surprise here that the storyline has come from del Toro (along with frequent collaborator, Matthew Robbins). Robbins will also be the scripwriter.  Del Toro will co-produce alongside Jim Henson Company's Lisa Henson and Jason Lust, and Allison Abbate.  Gary Ungar will be executive producer, along with Pathe's Francois Ivernel and Cameron McCracken.

When asked about the darker take on this much loved story, del Toro said "There has to be darkness in any fairy tale or children's narrative work, something the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson and Walt Disney understood,"  he went on to say "We tend to call something Disney-fied, but a lot of people forget how powerfully disturbing the best animated Disney movies are, including those kids being turned into donkeys in Pinocchio."

According to a source at Deadline, Michelle Pfeiffer is currently in talks to play the matriarch in the upcoming Tim Burton directed, Dark Shadows.  If Pfeiffer lands the role, she will play Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, the head of the Collins family, longtime owners of a cannery and shipping company in a small, fictitional sea village in Maine.

Other collaborations with Burton include, Sweeney Todd, and most currently, Alice in  Wonderland.

If they land the  roles, they would be joining Eva Green as the witch, Angelique, Jackie Earle as Willie Loomis  and Hayley  Bella Heathcote and as the young governess, Victoria Winters.

Bruno Mars Gives a High Caliber Performance at The 53rd Annual Grammys!

Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae, and B.o.B. gave a retro Motown inspired performance at Sunday night's 53rd Annual Grammys at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

At about 2:17, the medley takes a decidedly retro (black and white) turn to Motown inspired coolness.  No wonder they got a standing ovation!

Gaga won Best Short Form Music Video, as well as a Grammy for best Pop Vocal Album for Fame Monster!

* Review*: Kamui Gaiden

Legend tells of an outcast rising from the lowest feudal caste 'hinin' to become one of the most feared of the 'shinobi' class.  This lone ninja, KAMUI, soon becomes a fugitive to his clan-- branding himself 'nukenin' (a fugitive for life).

As he travels from fishing village to fishing village, Kamui soon learns about the gift of compassion and family attachments, but his past returns to haunt him as his clansmen close in.

KAMUI GAIDEN is directed by acclaimed Japanese Academy Award winner, YOICHI SAI, and based on manga by SHIRATO SANPEI.  The ocean scenes are vivid, as if Hokusai's paintings of massive tsunamis have come to life.

The CG effects are not quite  believable, though the wuxia inspired wire fu, gives the film the necessary fantasy feel it appears to be going for (even if it goes a little overboard).  Some scenes obviously miss their mark as ninjas leap in a pas de deux of movement.  Even CG sharks and fish get in on the flying.

Overall, it's a beautifully told story, though a little slow in pace. A good majority of the film focuses on how Kamui forms relationships. For those who are looking solely for an action film, they may need to look elsewhere, but for those who are looking for a visually stunning magical realist tale that takes place in feudal Japan, this film marks a wonderful escape into the world of the NINJA.

Reinvention of 'Sherlock'

Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) © BBC
Benedict Cumberbatch is the most current incarnation of Sherlock Holmes. He stars in the  BBC Wales and WGBH Boston co-produced Masterpiece Anthology TV Series,  Sherlock, which first aired on BBC and then PBS (in America), this past summer. The project is a collaboration between Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (both also write on Doctor Who).

Benedict Cumberbatch is not new to the detective genre.  He has appeared in the Marple Series (Marple: Murder Is Easy), previously, as well as having starred in numerous films, including, Amazing Grace and, more recently, Atonement.  He is a theater trained actor first, having a myriad of theatre credits to his name.

What makes this 'Sherlock' unique is that instead of setting it in the Victorian Age, Moffat and Gatiss have completely reinvented Sherlock and landed him right in the middle of the 21st century.  Sherlock is still rash and meticulously asocial-Sherlock even calls himself a "highly functioning sociopath".  There are implications that he may have some kind of drug addiction (which is not new), though his smoking pipe is ousted for the more updated, nicotine patches.  In this series, Sherlock dresses like he came straight out of a GQ ad.  He wears thick tweed overcoats and patterned jackets and scarves.  It's not surprising, then, that after the show first aired, Savile Row and major clothiers in London noted a dramatic increase in sales of  tweed and patterned styled frocks/overcoats and scarves, similar to the ones that Cumberbatch wears on the show.

This Sherlock makes no apologies for using 21st Century technology. He loves texting and does it as a means of contacting Watson (Martin Freeman) and numerous other characters. He also uses blogging and other means of deducing evidence in what he calls "the science of deduction".

Dialogue too is modernized.  So instead of "the game is afoot" we get "the game is on".  And so, my friends, the game IS on.
*********************************
Sherlock returns for a second season with 3 (90 min long) episodes in the Fall of 2011. Word is mum on what the episodes will revolve around, but Steven Moffat  told The Guardian, "You can have three words to work from: Adler, Hound, Reichenbach. Those are your clues." Gattis has confirmed on Twitter that filming for the 2nd season will begin in May.

Super Bowl Half-Time Show

Tom Pennington/Getty Images

The Black Eyed Peas lead the halftime show on Sunday night's Super Bowl, as they were lowered onto a green-lit stage for a 10-minute set of some of their biggest hits, featuring cameos by Usher, Slash, and hundreds of "Tron"-like dancers.

As the Peas "trainsitioned into Boom Boom Pw, the dancers' LED suits lit up in green, and then in red as Slash emerged to play the power riffs of former band Guns N' Roses' Sweet Child O'Mine with Fergie taking vocals.  Usher joined in for OMG.  The Black Eyed Peas closed their set with The Time (Dirty Bit).

Black Eyed Peas' half-time set list:

"I Gotta Feeling"
"Boom Boom Pow"
"Sweet Child O' Mine" (Slash and Fergie)
"Pump It"
"Let's Get It Started"
"OMG" (Usher and will.i.am)
"Where Is the Love?"
"The Time (Dirty Bit)"

Other memorable musical highlights for the evening were commercials starring Eminem, Justin Bieber, Ozzy Osbourne, as well as Faith Hill.  Also, Lea Michele (Glee) sang a moving rendition of America The Beautiful for the pre-show. Christina Aguilera jumbled the words to the National Anthem before kickoff.

Christina Aguilera Fumbles National Anthem Lyrics at Super Bowl, while Lea Michele gives moving performance

At last night's Super Bowl XLV kickoff, Christina Aguilera led the crowd outside of Dallas in a new twist on America's National Anthem, 'The Star-Spangled Banner", confusing the words in the fourth line, which should read: "O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?" with the second line -singing "What so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming?" in a full belt.  Also, according to Billboard, she strained to hit the final note of the song.

'Glee' star Lea Michele, preceded Christina's performance with a moving rendition of "America The Beautiful", accompanied by a chorus of U.S. service members.

ThinkGeek

Valentine's Day is coming up and you don't know what to get that special someone?  How about a real world Columbian delicacy straight from the Colombian Amazon?

Yes, we're talking about edible giant toasted leafcutter ants! For realz! Mmmmmmm.

They are available over at ThinkGeek for $19.99 (on sale) and here are the specs:

"Time for science. There is a type of leafcutter ant called Atta laevigata. It is a delicacy in many parts of Northern South America, and has been since pre-Columbian (and that is pre-Christopher Columbus, not the country) time. These ants - the largest type of leafcutter ant in the world - are thought to be aphrodisiacs, and are therefore quite a common wedding gift. They also make a nice snack, which is why we bring you Giant Toasted Leafcutter Ants.

Giant Toasted Leafcutter Ants hold two secrets. One, they are very high in protein and low in saturated fat. Two, they have a very unique taste. And C, they are commonly called (by those in the know): "hormigas culonas." That roughly translates into "big ass ants" - so named for the size of their abdomen, but also appropriate for today's slang. Giant Toasted Leafcutter Ants - get 'em now, while the gettin' is good".
